A medical review examined retinitis pigmentosa, a group of inherited diseases that gradually destroy the retina’s light-sensing cells. Many patients first experience difficulty seeing at night, followed by loss of peripheral vision and, in advanced cases, central vision.

Researchers explained that diagnosis may involve retinal imaging, visual-field testing, electroretinography, family history, and genetic testing. Although there is no general cure, low-vision support can improve daily life, and certain complications may be medically treated.

Experts concluded that gene therapy, retinal implants, stem-cell treatments, and other emerging technologies may offer future options. They emphasized early diagnosis and genetic counseling because different genetic mutations may require different treatments.
