AI Cannot Replace Entrepreneurs
Listen to the current panic about artificial intelligence, and it will remind you of a techno-thriller predicting that entrepreneurs are an endangered species. With sophisticated algorithms writing intricate contracts, streamlining logistics, and analyzing market developments, the cultural presumption is that technology will ultimately take over the job of entrepreneurs.
Yet, this entire line of thinking gets the concept of entrepreneurship wrong. It’s true that AI is an unlimited source of energy; however, it doesn’t have a pilot. Although automation will revolutionize the process of founding businesses, technology will not be able to replace the entrepreneur, who is the only one capable of dealing with uncertainty. After all, AI completes tasks, not jobs.
Innovation Requires More Than Data
Innovation involves overcoming the process of “zero to one”. Being a predictive tool, AI is wholly dependent upon past data to establish the most probable move. This is very effective when one is working in a structured environment. Entrepreneurship, however, requires working within areas where no data currently exists. When Airbnb began its operations, all the data from the past made sleeping in an unknown person’s spare room highly risky and unviable. Any AI predicting the success of this company would predictably have found it an absolute disaster since all the data predicted it to fail. Entrepreneurs thrive by going against what historical data predicts. They predict changes in humans even before those changes become measurable.
Trust Is Built by Humans, Not Machines
Moving past the inception stage, a business will only exist as a result of human trust—an asset which can only be built upon through emotional intelligence rather than computing power. Starting a company requires someone who has to continuously convince other people of something they have yet to see come to fruition. Investment does not come from ideas alone; rather, investors bet on the persistence, determination, and human qualities of the founders. Likewise, getting a skilled person to leave a secure corporate job in order to risk everything at a startup also requires a strong vision of a human story. Algorithms may be able to design a great presentation, but nothing can replace the ability to sit across the table from the person being hired and convey the pure confidence needed to convince them to join.
Risk and Conviction Define Entrepreneurship
However, the main distinguishing factor here is that entrepreneurship requires putting one’s skin in the game. The AI does not have to bear the risks – it does not lose all of its savings if the product fails, or does not sit up at 3 o’clock in the morning wondering how to pay the staff. Since there are no consequences for being wrong, the AI lacks the conviction. There is never just one right thing to do when a business comes to the crucial point in its life. This decision is always a gamble driven by a founder’s values and conviction. The AI may calculate all probabilities. The human being is capable of taking a risk.
The Rise of the Centaur Entrepreneur
Does this mean that everything else will remain the same? In the upcoming future, we will enter the era of the “centaur” entrepreneur, combining the vision and conviction of a human being with the speed of a machine. With AI, a single entrepreneur can become a highly efficient and scalable team, letting the humanity unleash its creativity in ways it has never been able to before.
After all, AI is an instrument of unparalleled power. But it still lacks something uniquely human.
