Researchers reviewed three major treatments: scleral buckling, pneumatic retinopexy, and vitrectomy. Each procedure can reattach the retina, but the best choice depends on the location of the tear, the condition of the eye, and the complexity of the detachment.
Experts concluded that treatment should begin quickly because delayed repair may cause permanent blindness. They emphasized that final vision often depends on whether the macula has detached and how rapidly surgery is performed.
