A large systematic review examined how common age-related cataracts are in different regions and age groups. Researchers analyzed 45 studies involving 161,947 participants to estimate the global prevalence of this major cause of visual impairment.
The study found that approximately 17.2% of participants had some form of cataract. Nuclear and cortical cataracts each affected about 8% of participants, while posterior subcapsular cataracts were less common. Cataract prevalence increased sharply with age and varied among world regions.
Experts concluded that aging is one of the strongest factors associated with cataract development. They emphasized the growing need for accessible eye examinations and cataract surgery as older populations continue to increase worldwide.
