Effect of tablet notetaking on neck muscle: What is best angle to prevent pain?

How to prevent notetaking pain?

Nowadays, people, especially young adults and college students, notetake on their tablets. However, many people are suffered from pain from notetaking due to its wrong posture and muscle activity.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two tablet tilt angles, 0° (horizontal) and 30°, during tablet writing on neck and shoulder posture, muscle activity, and both subjective and objective discomfort. In addition, the study aimed to examine the effects of prolonged use over a 40-minute period in order to determine the most appropriate tablet tilt angle and optimal timing for rest breaks.

Using a 30° tablet tilt reduced neck bending, shoulder strain, and neck discomfort compared to a flat (0°) position, although activity in the right upper trapezius muscle increased. During the 40-minute task, neck discomfort and heart rate variability rose, especially after 20 minutes, while posture and most muscle activity stayed similar. Overall, a 30° tilt helps improve posture, but taking a break after about 20 minutes is recommended to prevent neck strain.
