What Is FaceAge? AI That Estimates Biological Age from Facial Photos

FaceAge: AI-Based Facial Analysis Predicting Biological Age and Cancer Survival Rates

Nowadays, many new techniques are emerging through the use of AI. FaceAge is one of deeplearning model that predicts people’s biological age based on only face photograph. There was a research that studies possiblity of predicting biological age and survival rate of cancer patients based on AI-based face photograph analysis.

The study was conducted through several steps. First, FaceAge analyzed faces of 6000 cancer patients. Then, the researchers compared the actual age and biological age predicted by FaceAge. As the FaceAge score is higher(biologically looks older), the survival rate from cancer was low.

Moreover, Age predicted by FaceAge was 5 years higher than actual age in average and high biological age was associated with decreased cancer survival. When the clinicans provided more data to FaceAge, the accurancy of 6-month surivival predictions improved from roughly 74% to 80%.

Although this research shows that AI’s ability is limitless and groundbreaking, there are still some limitations, as the training data have limited diversity in terms of race and age, restricing generalizability of the model.

In conclusion, there are many new research papers which test or design a study that utilizes AI and most of them, including this study, shows positive effect of AI. As the use of AI gets ubiquitous, utilization of AI to medical field is inevitable and new laws and conflicts are predicted.
