A recent review examined the medical complications of high myopia, a condition usually caused by excessive lengthening of the eyeball. Although glasses or surgery can correct blurred distance vision, they cannot remove the structural risks created by an elongated eye.

Researchers found that high myopia increases the risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, abnormal blood vessel growth, and several forms of macular damage. These complications may develop through changes involving inflammation, oxidative stress, and weakening of tissues inside the eye.

Experts concluded that high myopia should be treated as more than a simple focusing problem. They recommended controlling myopia during childhood and continuing regular retinal and glaucoma examinations throughout adulthood.
