In traditional international relations, 193 which is the number of sovereign member states of the United Nations (UN) was frequently defined. However, the geopolitical landscape of today is more complicated. According to the Union of International Associations (UIA) 2024/2025 data, while there are over 78,500 organizations in their database, approximately 45,000 international organizations are currently active. 

This suggests that sovereign states no longer hold all the authority. Even the private sector is feeling the burden of this rapid global change, too. Referring to the PwC 27th Annual Global CEO Survey (2024), 45% of global CEOs doubt their business will be economically viable in ten years if it continues in the same direction. 

This “viability concern” demonstrates the continued relevance of international relations (IR). In a global system where 70% of CEOs believe Generative AI will significantly change how businesses deliver value. It is not just about politics but about survival. Now, understanding the intersection of technology, policy, and global risk is more essential.

IR students are learning how to negotiate a dense ecosystem of 45,000 active organizations and a volatile market where nearly half of corporate leaders are concerned about their future. Students need to know how to analyze these diverse entities and technological shifts that influence the global order.
