A recent review examined diabetic retinopathy, a serious eye complication that affects many people with diabetes. Long-term high blood sugar can damage retinal blood vessels and trigger inflammation, fluid leakage, and abnormal vessel growth.

Researchers found that early disease may cause no noticeable symptoms. As the condition progresses, patients may develop blurred vision, diabetic macular edema, bleeding, or permanent retinal damage. Treatments include anti-VEGF injections, laser therapy, steroids, and surgery for advanced cases.

Experts concluded that prevention and early screening remain extremely important. Controlling blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol can slow the disease, while regular retinal examinations allow doctors to begin treatment before major vision loss occurs.
