What is Glaucoma?

A major medical review examined how glaucoma damages the optic nerve and gradually causes permanent vision loss. The disease often develops without early symptoms, making it difficult for patients to recognize before significant damage occurs.

Researchers found that high pressure inside the eye is the most important treatable risk factor. Eye drops are commonly used first, while laser therapy or surgery may be needed when medication does not control the pressure effectively.

Experts concluded that lowering eye pressure remains the only proven way to slow glaucoma. They emphasized regular eye examinations for people with a family history of glaucoma and careful use of prescribed medication to prevent further vision loss.
