A recent review examined advances in diagnosing and treating keratoconus, a disease in which the cornea becomes thin and develops an irregular cone-like shape. This change can cause blurred vision, distorted images, and increasing astigmatism.
Researchers found that corneal imaging can detect early structural changes before severe vision loss develops. Glasses and contact lenses may improve vision, while corneal cross-linking can slow or stop disease progression. Advanced cases may require corneal implants or transplantation.
Experts concluded that early diagnosis is especially important because existing corneal damage is difficult to reverse. They recommended monitoring young or high-risk patients and treating progressive keratoconus before the cornea becomes severely weakened.
