Winning Hearts and Minds: The True Power Behind Soft Power

Winning Hearts and Minds: The True Power Behind Soft Power

When you hear the term ‘soft power,’ what is the first thing that comes to mind? Some people may feel unfamiliar with this term. To provide a hint, K-pop, Hollywood movies, or global food trends would be great examples for describing this term. Even though this term may sound simple,  ‘soft power’ has a much more profound meaning than it may seem.

In the field of politics or international relations, soft power is a concept that Joseph S. Nye, Jr. first created in the late 1980s. According to the abstract in his journal “Soft Power and the Public Diplomacy Revisited,” soft power is the ability to affect others to obtain the outcomes one wants through attraction and persuasion rather than coercion or payment. He adds that a country’s soft power rests on its resources of culture, values, and policies.

So, for example, if one country desires a specific outcome, it may use the concept of soft power by sharing its culture, showing positive values, or promoting helpful global policies. By utilizing this concept continuously, this country can build positive and strong relationships with other nations. However, as Joseph Nye pointed out, the effectiveness of soft power can vary depending on a country’s resources, which are mainly “culture, values, and policies”.

This was a brief explanation of the concept of soft power. If you are interested in soft power, I highly recommend you to read one of Joseph Nye’s journals to explore this idea further.

And as a student interested in international relations and psychology, this concept really fascinated me because by reading many journals, I thought the fundamental reason for using persuasion and attraction in soft power is about winning the hearts and minds of people.
