A medical review examined dry eye disease, a condition in which the tears cannot properly protect and lubricate the eye. Patients may experience burning, redness, blurred vision, irritation, or the feeling that something is trapped in the eye.

Researchers found that dry eye can result from insufficient tear production or excessive tear evaporation. Artificial tears may provide relief, while eyelid hygiene can help patients with blocked oil glands. Anti-inflammatory medicine or tear-duct plugs may be recommended in more persistent cases.

Experts concluded that no single test can diagnose every case of dry eye. They emphasized combining the patient’s symptoms with a careful eye examination and selecting treatment according to the underlying cause.
